Growing up in the charming streets of Canterbury, I developed a deep appreciation for community and connection. For over 20 years, I’ve been immersed in the vibrant hospitality scene of London, managing venues across the city—from the eclectic energy of Hackney to the refined elegance of Mayfair.
My journey has been driven by one simple belief: great service is about more than just drinks—it’s about creating moments that make people feel welcome, valued, and excited to be here. At The John, I’ve poured my passion into crafting a space where expertly made cocktails, a carefully curated drinks menu, and a buzzing, friendly atmosphere come together.

A Brief History of The John
Originally built in the 1930s as a public toilet, the site served as public conveniences for the residents of Canterbury until the year 2000.
In 2015, the site was purchased at auction and refurbishment works began to convert the premises into a luxury cocktail bar.
In March 2025, the site was refurbished and reopened under new management as The John. The future? Well, that’s up to us!
What's in a Name?
“The John” is a slang term commonly used in reference to a toilet – a nod to our premise’s unique beginnings.
The term originates from Sir John Harington, who is credited with inventing the flush toilet in 1596!
